Facial hair is probably the most underrated tool in a looksmaxxer's arsenal, partly because it falls under fashion/style and people don't think of it as structural. But a well-shaped beard fundamentally changes how people perceive your jaw, chin, and overall facial harmony.

How beard affects jaw perception: a beard adds visual mass to the lower third of the face. For people with a weak chin or less defined jaw, a beard can compensate significantly β€” it's essentially a non-surgical jaw augmentation. Studies have found that stubble (short beard) is rated most attractive on average, while full beards are associated with maturity and social dominance but not always peak attractiveness.

The shape matters more than the length. The key variables are:

Neck line β€” the most important and most often wrong. Your neckline should follow the natural curve above your Adam's apple. The mistake most men make is trimming it too high, which creates a double-chin illusion from the front. Find your natural jaw/neck crease with your finger and trim just above that.

Cheek line β€” a natural clean cheek line that follows your growth pattern looks more attractive than shaving the cheeks high. The only exception is if your natural cheek growth is wildly uneven.

Beard shape and face shape β€” if you have a round face, you want to elongate it, so a beard that's fuller at the chin and shorter on the sides adds length. If you have a long face, avoid extra chin length. If you have a weak chin, more length at the chin compensates.

Grooming products β€” beard oil keeps the skin underneath healthy and reduces flaking. A good beard brush trains the hairs to grow in a consistent direction. These are not optional if you have a longer beard.

The bottom line: if you can grow a beard, it's worth learning to shape it properly. Even basic stubble maintained at 3-5mm with a good neckline is better than a patchy ungroomed beard or a completely bare face for most jaw shapes.

The neckline point is huge. I see guys every day with decent beards ruined by a neckline that makes them look like they have no neck. The rule of two fingers above the Adam's apple is a rough guide but looking at the natural jaw crease in a mirror is more reliable.

Stubble being rated most attractive on average makes sense evolutionarily β€” it signals maturity and testosterone without fully obscuring the face. But I think it's also very face-shape dependent. On a weaker jaw it might actually be better to go fuller to compensate. The average masks individual variation.

What do you recommend for patchy growth? My cheeks are noticeably thinner in patches. Is growing it longer to cover the patches worth it or does it just emphasise the unevenness?

For patchiness: longer growth tends to allow hairs to overlap and cover patches better than short stubble. Let it grow for 4-6 weeks before deciding whether it works β€” a lot of guys give up at the patchy 2-week stage when they'd have a solid beard at 6 weeks. Minoxidil applied to the beard area has some evidence for improving density in sparse areas, though this is off-label and results vary.
