CeraVe vs La Roche-Posay — which is actually better?
I keep seeing this debate come up in skincare threads so let me lay out my actual thoughts based on the formulations.
Both brands are owned by L'Oréal. Both are designed by dermatologists. Both are non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and accessible at most pharmacies. The real question is which specific products from each brand are best for which skin types and use cases.
CeraVe strengths: the ceramide complex is well-formulated and genuinely beneficial for barrier repair. Their Hydrating Cleanser is one of the best basic cleansers I've used — it doesn't strip, it leaves the skin comfortable, and it won't interact badly with anything. CeraVe PM is an excellent lightweight night moisturiser with niacinamide. Their SA cleanser is good for body acne or chest/back texture.
LRP strengths: the Toleriane range is genuinely better for sensitive skin than anything CeraVe makes — the Double Repair Moisturiser in particular has excellent soothing ingredients. The Anthelios sunscreens are among the best on the market for photostability and elegant texture. Effaclar Duo is still a solid acne treatment.
Where CeraVe falls short: their SPF products are generally mediocre by comparison. The moisturising SPF creams feel heavy and often pill under makeup.
Where LRP falls short: their cleansers are fine but nothing special. The Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser is good, but it's not dramatically better than CeraVe Hydrating. And LRP is usually more expensive.
My honest take: use CeraVe for your cleanser and basic moisturiser, use LRP for your sunscreen. The divide isn't really about which brand is better overall, it's about which specific products each brand does best.
Completely agree on the sunscreen point. LRP Anthelios is the benchmark. I've tried probably 15 different facial SPFs and nothing in the CeraVe range comes close in terms of wearability. The tint SPF50 from Anthelios is legitimately the best daily SPF I've used — evens out skin tone slightly, sits perfectly under nothing, and has great UV filter coverage.
What about for someone with oily skin? I've tried CeraVe PM and it feels a bit heavy for me. Should I try the LRP Toleriane double repair or is that even heavier?
For oily skin I'd actually recommend neither of those as a night moisturiser. CeraVe PM is light but you might prefer the CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturising Lotion — it's basically water-textured. For LRP, the Toleriane Sensitive Fluid is gel-cream and much lighter than the Double Repair. If you're oily and on tret, you might not even need a dedicated moisturiser most nights — the tret base cream may be enough.
I switched to LRP Anthelios after reading this thread and honestly it changed my morning routine. I had been putting off sunscreen because everything I'd tried felt greasy or made me look shiny. This one is actually wearable every day.
